Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Will I get a person on the phone or an answering machine if I call SAFE Shelter?

A: All calls are answered by trained SAFE Shelter staff, never an answering machine.

Q: What if the shelter is full when I call?

A: SAFE Shelter works closely with two other nearby certified shelters. If the shelter is full, we will call one of the other shelters and secure beds for you. SAFE Shelter will provide transportation if you don’t have any. Once a bed becomes available, you can decide whether to stay at the other shelter or come to SAFE Shelter.

Q: What if I have 10 children?

A: SAFE Shelter will admit you with all of your children up to the age of 18. Rooms are joined by a bathroom, so large families don’t have to be split up in the shelter.

Q: What if I am a man needing services or shelter?

A: SAFE Shelter provides services to ALL victims of domestic violence, regardless of gender, race or religious affiliation. The majority of male victims seek services through the Outreach Program; however, if a male client requires shelter, the shelter will provide him with a room in a nearby hotel.

Q: I don’t have a car. How will I get my children to school?

A: The SAFE Shelter Child Advocate will arrange bus transportation through the Chatham County Public School System.

Q: If I go back to my abuser and he hurts me again, can I come back?

A: There is no limit to the number of times a person can come through SAFE Shelter; however, disclosing the location of the shelter to your abuser would require us to locate you in another shelter.
